Toronto sent Mark Hendrickson to the Devil Rays, via Colorado, in a
three-team deal. Toronto received Justin Speier and the Rockies got Joe
Kennedy from Tampa Bay. "Away from SkyDome, he pitched very well," said
Devil Rays general manager Chuck LaMar. "It's a very tough place to pitch.
We think he'll pitch better not only in our park but throughout 2004."
Hendrickson led all American League rookies in '03 with 30 starts. He was
second in wins and third in innings pitched. His Fantasy stock drops a bit as the
Devil Rays do not have enough quality players around him.

2003 Season
In his first full season as a major league starter, Mark Hendrickson logged 5.3
innings per outing over his 30 starts. He had been moving away from starting in
recent minor league seasons, but with a couple of solid August wins over
Seattle, he showed more promise as a starter toward the end of the season. He
won three of his final four decisions, holding the Devil Rays and Mariners to
two earned runs in each victory.

Pitching
Long and lanky like Randy Johnson, Hendrickson's fastball generally travels to
the plate in the high 80s. He doesn't overpower anyone and lacks an out pitch
versus righthanders, who feasted off him in 2003. While he has a decent
changeup, his sinker and cut slider don't serve him well on SkyDome's artificial
turf. Opposing hitters averaged .338 there. Because hitters generally make
contact, Hendrickson can't afford to issue walks, and he may have pressed to
get ahead in the count last year. When opponents put the first pitch in play,
they batted .363.
